Career Day at Grant Elementary School
We truly love being part of our community, even sharing about mental health with young folks.
I didn’t want to just talk about mental health — I wanted them to feel it, understand it, and know that it belongs to them too.
Understanding Mental Health
We talked about what mental health means in a simple way — how our thoughts and feelings live inside us, and how we can notice them in our bodies.
I asked them questions like:
👉 “Where do you feel your feelings?”
👉 “Do they feel fast or slow?”
They really leaned in.
Practicing Awareness and Calm
We practiced breathing together — slowing it down, placing a hand on the belly, learning how to calm the body when things feel overwhelming.
We discussed the nervous system in a way they could understand — like how our body reacts when we feel scared, upset, or nervous.
Honest Conversations About Social Challenges
We talked about bullying, rumors, and trust.
We discussed how sometimes we share something with a friend thinking it’s private, and it can still get out — and how that can hurt.
This led to an important moment — talking about therapy as a space where what you share is protected, safe, and respected.
Support Systems Matter
I asked them to think about who they can go to — someone who makes them feel safe, heard, and cared for.
We talked about how a therapist can be one of those people. Not to fix them, but to listen, understand, and help them problem-solve and feel better.
One key takeaway: all feelings are okay. We can’t always be happy, and that’s normal — but we can learn how to take care of what we feel.
A Heartfelt Moment
One student shared they had been in therapy before, during a time when their father was not in the home.
That moment reminded me of something so powerful — the work we do stays with people. Even when we don’t see it, seeds are being planted.
Whoever that therapist was — you made a difference. You showed up for that child in a way they still remember today.
A Reminder to Fellow Therapists
✨ What we do matters.
✨ We matter too.
When a student asked me if I love what I do, my answer came so easily — yes.
Because I get to walk alongside people in their most real moments.
Because I get to help them feel seen, heard, and a little less alone.
Because I get to help them find ways to feel better.
And that will always mean something to me.
Grateful for moments like this — where we get to plant seeds early.
